Onward moves through a quieter kind of atmosphere. Bare branches hold the lower edge of the painting while gold leaf birds drift upward through shifting light and open space.
 
The surface was built through many underlying paint layers before the final image emerged, allowing texture and traces of earlier history to remain visible throughout the work. Gold leaf catches changing light across the surface, appearing and disappearing as you move through the space around the painting.
