Steadying.

Original 30" x 60" Oil Painting on Birch Cradled Wood Panel

Steadying is a painting poised in the moment before movement.  It's the quiet pause of reflection and a steadying breath.  Standing among the grasses, you are surrounded by late summer heat and the hum of life continuing on, without regard to your intention.   There is no haste and no forced decision, but a subtle opening allows for movement if you choose.

The painting reflects the tension between staying somewhere that is safe and stepping forward into discomfort, change, and the possibility of growth.

Steadying is the first completed painting in an ongoing series exploring containment, expansion, and belonging.  It looks at the pull between what keeps us safe and the call to move, explore, and enlarge beyond familiar boundaries.

Look closely and you’ll find small meadow inhabitants tucked among the grasses. One of my favorite parts of painting Steadying was hiding these little friends throughout the meadow, a reminder that it belongs to more than just us.

The painting moves through many shades of green, from crisp and bright to shadowy and dark, with umbers, ochres and yellows and touches of purple and dusty lavender.

Steadying was exhibited at Art & Soul of the Magic Valley in 2026.
